This guide aims to help with common GPS issues on Android devices. If you are experiencing intermittent GPS tracking then these steps should resolve the issue on most Android phones.


Current version

Always make sure that the latest version of the Map My Tracks is installed on the device.
  1. Open Google Play on your device.
  2. Search for Map My Tracks or find it in 'My Apps'.
  3.  If there is an update button you will need to install the latest version. 
 

Location settings

Make sure that Map My Tracks is entitled to use GPS location. 
  1. Open your devices Settings app.
  2. Tap on Security & Location > Location > App-level permissions
  3. Ensure that Map My Tracks is selected.
 

Battery / Power Saving & Protected App Settings

More recent versions of Android may require the phone to be optimised to allow Map My Tracks to track when running in the background.

Please note, that the location of Battery Saving settings on your phone may differ from device to device.

For Android 6, 7 or 8.
  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. Tap Battery on your phone.
  3. Select the options menu (three dots) in the top right corner and select 'Battery optimization'.
  4. Switch to the 'All apps' list in the dropdown.
  5. Select Map My Tracks and choose 'Don't optimize'.
For Android 9.
  1. Open your device's Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications  > Advanced  > Special app access > Battery optimisation.
  3. Switch to the 'All apps' list in the dropdown.
  4. Select Map My Tracks and choose 'Don't optimize'.
