Overview
Map My Tracks Endurance is designed specifically for event participants who want to share their live location during organised events. The app intelligently manages GPS usage to preserve battery life while keeping your supporters informed of your progress throughout the event.
Before the Event
Important: Download and test the Endurance app at least 2-3 days before your event to ensure everything is configured correctly.
Download the App
- iOS: Download from App Store
- Android: Download from Google Play
Initial Setup
When you first open the app, you'll be guided through an onboarding process. The steps differ slightly between iOS and Android:
Android Setup
- Create or log in to your free Map My Tracks account
- Allow location access - This must be set to "Allow all the time"
- Enable background location - Required for continuous tracking
- Disable battery optimization for the Endurance app - This prevents Android from stopping the app to save power
- Allow notifications - You'll receive important updates about tracking status
- Test your setup:
- Tap "Start" to begin a test track
- Move around for a few minutes
- Tap "Finish" to end the test
- Verify your test track appears in your account
iOS Setup
- Enable location services - Initially select "Allow While Using App"
- Create or log in to your free Map My Tracks account
- Test your setup:
- Tap "Start" to begin a test track
- Important: When prompted, change location permissions to "Always Allow"
- Move around for a few minutes
- Tap "Stop" to finish the test track
- Verify your test track appears in your account
Essential Requirements
Before event day, ensure:
- ✓ Mobile data connection is enabled and working
- ✓ You have sufficient data allowance for the event duration
- ✓ Do NOT enable Airplane Mode - this will stop live tracking
- ✓ Your phone is fully charged
- ✓ Consider bringing a portable battery pack for longer events
On Event Day
Starting Your Live Track
- Open the Map My Tracks Endurance app before you start the event
- Tap "Start" when you're ready to begin
- Your live location will now be visible on the event map for spectators and organizers
Using Event Check-in Points (if applicable)
Some events include check-in points along the route:
- When you reach a check-in location, tap the check-in button
- Wait for the spinner animation to complete - this confirms your check-in has been recorded
- Continue with your event
If the App Closes
Don't worry if the app accidentally closes during your event:
- Reopen the Endurance app
- Tap "Start" again to resume live tracking
- Your track will continue from where it left off
Troubleshooting
Live tracking isn't working
- Check that mobile data is enabled (not Airplane Mode)
- Verify location permissions are set to "Always Allow" (iOS) or "Allow all the time" (Android)
- Restart the app and begin tracking again
App keeps closing (Android)
- Ensure battery optimization is disabled for the Endurance app
- Check that background location access is enabled
Battery draining quickly
- The Endurance app is optimized to minimize battery drain by only activating GPS when needed
- Consider using a portable battery pack for events longer than 4-6 hours
- Close other apps running in the background
